Dodo exchange routes SmartTrade swaps through available liquidity
Updated
Dodo exchange combines liquidity pools with SmartTrade, a service that compares trading routes for token swaps. A quote estimates the output for a selected input amount. Completing the exchange requires any necessary token approval, successful swap execution and confirmation of the received asset. Each stage leaves different evidence, so an approval confirmation alone does not establish a completed trade.
Pool pricing, routing and wallet permissions affect different parts of the exchange. Understanding those differences makes the quoted amount easier to assess and helps explain why a submitted transaction, a successful receipt and a usable token balance can appear at different times.
The short version: A successful approval authorizes token spending; only the swap transaction and resulting token balance establish whether the exchange completed.
Quote review separates approval from swap execution
For a same-network SmartTrade swap, begin with the intended input token, output token and amount. The connected wallet must hold the input asset and enough native currency for transaction fees. Confirm the selected network and asset identities, including contract addresses for ERC-20 tokens, before considering the quote.
For an ERC-20 input token, the existing allowance determines whether approval is needed before the swap. Native currency does not require an ERC-20 approval. An approval grants the specified spender permission to transfer that token within an allowance. It does not purchase the output asset. Before approving, verify the spender address and allowance amount in the wallet request. After approving, check the resulting allowance before continuing.
After any required approval, review the refreshed output estimate, slippage tolerance and transaction deadline. A quote reflects changing liquidity conditions. The approval rule remains the same even when another trade changes the rate available for execution.
| Action | Evidence of completion | Asset scope |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh the quote | Updated output estimate | Selected input and output tokens; balances remain unchanged |
| Approve token spending | Successful approval and resulting allowance | Specified ERC-20 input token and spender |
| Execute the swap | Successful swap receipt and received output | Selected tokens on the same network |
| Approval establishes permission; swap execution establishes the exchange only when its receipt and output agree. | ||
Submit the swap only when its terms match the intended exchange. Then use its transaction hash to inspect the execution result. Check the output token at the recipient address before using it in another transaction.
If the only successful transaction is the approval, the swap remains incomplete. If the swap is pending, its final output remains unresolved. Repeating a completed approval does not execute the swap. Check any submitted swap’s status before sending another swap request.
PMM pool pricing and SmartTrade routing perform different jobs
The Proactive Market Maker, or PMM, determines prices within DODO liquidity pools. Its pricing curve responds to inventory and the pool’s parameters. As an asset becomes scarcer, the mechanism raises its quoted price to encourage replenishment. The curve’s sensitivity influences how much a trade moves the execution price.
SmartTrade searches liquidity sources for a route between the selected tokens. A route can use DODO pools, external pools or a combination. Consequently, a swap initiated through the exchange does not necessarily execute entirely against PMM liquidity. The actual route determines which pools contribute to the output.
Liquidity creation supports a different exchange role
Token creation, custom pools and Crowdpooling support the supply side of the exchange. Crowdpooling distributes tokens and establishes a liquid market, while liquidity provision supplies assets for trading. These actions create different exposures from a simple swap: a liquidity provider holds a pool position whose composition and value can change. Depositing into a pool therefore requires a separate decision about its terms, inventory behavior and withdrawal conditions.
The quote and network fee describe different costs
A swap’s economic cost includes charges associated with its trading route and the network’s execution fee. Pool fees vary by pool, while SmartTrade also has a routing fee. Review the applicable breakdown without treating one published percentage as the total cost of every exchange.
Gas pays for network computation. A separate approval can consume gas before the swap does, so the wallet needs funds for both transactions when approval is necessary. Route complexity also affects computational work. Compare output estimates on the same input amount and distinguish charges already reflected in the quote from separately payable network fees.
An included transaction that reverts can still consume gas. The revert undoes changes made during contract execution, but the network still charges for gas consumed. That distinction explains a reduced native-currency balance even when no exchange occurred.
Slippage tolerance and deadlines bound execution
Slippage tolerance limits the deterioration a swap will accept between its quote and execution. A tighter setting leaves less room for adverse movement and can increase failures. A wider setting permits worse execution; it does not improve the liquidity available to the trade.
The transaction deadline places a separate time condition on execution. A swap reaching the contract after its deadline cannot execute under those terms. Expiration does not guarantee the network immediately removes a pending transaction, and it does not erase gas already consumed.
Price impact is another distinction. It describes the effect of the trade itself on pool pricing. Slippage tolerance controls acceptable movement around the quote, so raising tolerance does not remove the price impact already present in that quote.
Submission creates a commitment before final confirmation
A signed, broadcast transaction can execute without the trading page remaining open. Closing the tab or disconnecting the wallet does not withdraw that transaction from the network. Before submission, declining the wallet request stops that request from proceeding.
After broadcast, pending status means execution remains unresolved. Some wallets support transaction replacement, subject to network rules and timing. A replacement cannot undo a transaction that already executed. Once a swap reaches finality, exchanging the received asset back requires a new trade at then-available terms.
A pending swap therefore deserves a status check before another submission. A second request can represent an additional exchange rather than a repair of the original request.
The receipt identifies what actually executed
A transaction receipt records execution status, block inclusion and logs. A pending transaction has no execution receipt. The transaction hash identifies the request, while the receipt establishes what the network processed. A successful receipt must belong to the swap rather than its preceding approval.
Token transfers help establish delivery. Match the output asset, recipient address and transferred amount to the intended exchange, checking the contract address for an ERC-20 output. A familiar ticker alone does not establish token identity. For an ERC-20 token transfer, the contract’s transfer event and the recipient’s token balance provide related evidence of the result.
The wallet’s fiat valuation answers a different question. Market-price changes can alter that display even when the token quantity remains unchanged.
Cross-chain routes require destination confirmation
DODO X also aggregates cross-chain routes through bridges. These routes involve a source network and a destination network, so source-side success alone does not establish receipt of the intended destination asset. Completion depends on the selected bridge and its processing. The destination token, recipient and resulting balance must match the requested exchange before the output can support another action. A same-network SmartTrade quote does not establish cross-chain availability.
Routing choices and limit orders change different conditions
Linear routing sends the input along one route, which can include intermediate tokens. Split-order routing distributes portions across pools to access different liquidity depths. More contract interactions can increase gas consumption, so a larger quoted output does not automatically mean a better result after network costs.
A limit order changes the execution condition rather than merely the route. It specifies an acceptable price and waits for a possible fill. DODO’s limit-order mechanism can use pool liquidity or other users’ orders. A submitted order is not a completed swap, and a quoted market price alone does not prove a fill occurred.
These differences matter when reading order history. An immediate swap’s transaction status and a limit order’s open status describe different commitments. Compare completed fills with their execution records, rather than interpreting every accepted request as delivered tokens.
Reconciliation connects the exchange record to spendable output
Reconciliation accounts for the input spent, output received and transaction fees. The transaction record preserves those details even when a wallet groups several activities together. Keep approval records separate from swap records, and distinguish source transactions from destination delivery on cross-chain routes.
Compare quantities in token units before interpreting changes in portfolio value. When the native currency also pays gas, its balance change can include both the exchange amount and execution costs. Other transfers involving the same address can also make a simple before-and-after balance comparison misleading.
The useful endpoint is an identified output asset at the intended address, supported by a successful execution record. If those details disagree, resolve the mismatch before treating the displayed balance as the proceeds of this swap.
Good to know
Can disconnecting my wallet remove an existing token approval?
Disconnecting a wallet does not change its on-chain token allowance. The approval belongs to the token contract’s record of an owner and spender. Changing or revoking it requires an allowance update. Closing a browser session therefore leaves any remaining permission in place.
Why can disabling indirect routing remove an available quote?
Disabling indirect routing excludes paths that use intermediate tokens. If the selected assets lack a usable direct pool, a route through another token may be the only available path. Removing that path can eliminate the quote even though both assets appear in the token selector.
Does submitting a DODO limit order require a network fee?
Submitting a DODO limit order does not itself incur gas. A required token approval is a separate on-chain action and can incur a network fee. The absence of a submission fee also does not mean the order has filled or that every later action involving it is free.
What happens when a limit order reaches its expiration time?
An expired limit order can no longer execute under that order’s terms. Its expiration time defines how long it remains eligible for execution. Expiration does not reverse an earlier completed fill, so order status and any execution record remain separate details.
Is DODO’s trading functionality available through an API?
DODO provides APIs for routing, limit orders and cross-chain trading. Its developer tools also expose trading data and support widget integration. An API response containing a quote or route is distinct from blockchain execution, so an integration must track the resulting transaction or order status separately.
Are trading receipts private because the exchange uses a connected wallet?
Transactions on public EVM networks expose addresses and execution data regardless of whether a wallet holds the signing keys. A receipt can reveal contract interactions and token-transfer logs. Sharing its transaction hash can therefore reveal the associated addresses and activity; it does not expose the wallet’s private key.
